Ideas overwhelm drama in ‘A Dangerous Method’ 2012/02/21 at 10:04 pm

David Cronenberg goes Merchant-Ivory. Or maybe its Last Tango in Switzerland. While theres no denying that the Canadian auteur brings his pervy intellect to an otherwise buttoned-down costume drama about the origins of psychoanalysis, A Dangerous Method isnt for everyone. And especially isnt for fanboys hoping for another Videodrome or ExistenZ.

Adhering to history as documented by letters and journals, Cronenberg presents a movie of ideas rather than fully formed drama, exploring the conflicting egos of friends-turned-rivals Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Viggo Mortensen). The catalyst for their professional embrace and personal rejection of each other is Sabina Spielrein (Keira Knightley), Jungs patient-turned-mistress-turned-disciple, who intellectually challenged both men before arriving at her own tragic end.

Newt Gingrich’s Blowhard Ideas Go Nowhere, CNN GOP Debate Rivals Say 2012/02/17 at 5:24 pm

If there was one critical takeaway for Florida voters from Thursday’s CNN Republican debate, it’s that Newt Gingrich’s opponents on stage all think of him as a bit of blowhard, with a lot of ideas that go nowhere.

Birthday gift ideas for Jerry Buss 2012/02/10 at 2:49 am

Its Friday, andLakers owner Jerry Buss just turned 78.

Everyone obviously knows where hes going. The Playboy Mansion and the poker tables. But there are a few other birthday gifts hed surely enjoy.

1. Lakers championship. Well, duh. Buss remains consumed with collecting Larry OBrien trophies every year. His willingness to spend money, deference to the Lakers front office and thirst for winning all contributed to the Lakers winning 10 of their 16 NBA championships under Buss watch. He views titles like fashion models view clothing: more is simply never enough.

2. Dwight Howard/Deron Williams. OK, so of course, Buss wants another Lakers championship for his birthday. But the Lakers are currently in no positionto do so. But heres the greatest form of gratitude Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak and executive/son Jim Buss could give to the Lakers owner. Secure Howard or Williams before the trade deadline. It salvages the Lakers currently lost hope in winning a championship this season.

3. David Stern apology. Perhaps this might not mitigate the league nixing the Chris Paul trade. But perhaps Stern can make amends by requiring the Lakers to pay less money in revenue sharing.

4. Mike Browns DVDs. Jerry and Jim Buss fell in love with Brown during his job interview because of his DVDs that detailed his numerous offensive and defensive sets. They always wanted a copy, but Brown refused to give one way. With the Lakers traveling for a pair of back-to-back games this weekend against Milwaukee and Minnesota, perhaps Buss can seewhether Brown left any at the Lakers practice facility in El Segundo. If anything, viewing the immensely detailed DVDs might help Buss realize the Lakers made the wrong hire. Keeping Brian Shaw as Phil Jacksons successor would haveminimized information overload.

5. More player personnel. The Lakers didnt retain contracts for most of the scouting department as a cost-cutting measure during the NBA work stoppage. Video coordinator Patrick OKeefe and scout Ryan West were rehired. They also hired international scout Antonio Maceiras. But OKeefe recently left to pursue further education, and the teams scouting department centerson an increased reliance on video work. It sure would be nice to have more personnel to help the Lakers preparation.

Obama’s Speech Took Ideas From the GOP and Rhetoric From Madison Avenue 2012/02/08 at 2:45 am

The president’s uninspiring State of the Union speech lacked his usual linguistic virtuosity–’Built to Last’? Really? And it was filled with ideas as shopworn as its language.

Newt Gingrich’s Ideas Provide Fodder For Opponents To Attack Electability 2012/02/07 at 3:33 pm

By Ros Krasny

COCOA BEACH, Florida–Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich likes to be known as an ideas guy. His brainstorms can seem straight out of science fiction – establishing a colony on the moon – or the novels of Charles Dickens – putting poor children to work as janitors.

The long line of head-scratchers provides fodder for his opponents to attack Gingrichs electability. The thought process that might lie behind the ideas – like suggesting mandatory drug testing for federal aid applicants – also contributes to the candidates reputation as a polarizing figure in the Republican race to pick a challenger to Democratic President Barack Obama in Novembers election.

Its his greatest strength and his most significant weakness. Senator (Rick) Santorum accused him in a debate last week of having grandiose ideas. Gingrich happily accepted the charge, said Dan Schnur, communications director for Senator John McCains 2000 Republican primary campaign.

Gingrich, a former speaker of the US House of Representatives, is running neck and neck with former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney in polls ahead of Floridas pivotal primary next Tuesday and in national Republican surveys.

Gingrichs odd ideas can pop up at campaign events, in his writings, in appearances on Sunday talk shows – a trend that led Romney to snipe this week that Gingrich was capable of delivering an October surprise a day, referring to an unexpected negative development shortly before the presidential election.

Police chief shares ideas for fostering shared sense of hope 2012/02/06 at 11:43 pm

A sense of faith and hope comes from many places from family and upbringing, from church and leaders of faith and even from within.

Community leaders also play a pivotal role in instilling a sense of hope, faith and values in the areas they serve.

We are challenged by the numbers of our youth being locked up, the lack of community within some neighborhoods and some general feelings of hopelessness.

The level of faith and action shown by our community leaders makes a big difference.

Dayton police Chief Richard Biehl believes emphatically in fighting crime and living in the present by being engaged in the community. He has worked his way up the ranks within law enforcement, with more than 30 years of service and dedication. He has been leader of Daytons police department for more than four years.

Among his goals for leading the department are to strengthen relationships with the community and further develop community partnerships to support areas hit hard by crime.

I believe theres a real need for a sense of community, Biehl said. Thats defined through us as a community being more connected, engaged and caring and getting outside of our comfort zones.

I had the chance to talk with Chief Biehl and asked him to share his ideas for fostering a shared sense of hope.

Q How can you encourage stronger feelings of hope through community engagement?

A My hope in moving forward is by attending community outreaches and neighborhood meetings. Everyone has a part, a mutual accountability. Its what we can do must do to improve and increase our safety within our communities. The result is having interdependence with the department and citizens of Dayton. We have a responsibility to one another.

Q Can you give us an example of how communities can instill a sense of hope?

A There was a hate crime committed out west. They sprayed painted graffiti all over this home. The police station was called. In turn, the police department called local painters to see what anyone could or would do. In a short amount of time, this home was repainted from the bottom to the top. One of the painters said all of his life he wanted to help. This inspiring story defines a team within a city through connection, being engaged and caring for their community.

Q Whats coming up within Dayton to equip citizens with the tools and skills needed to help in the safety of the community?

A On May 19, at Ponitz Career Center in Dayton, the Miami Valley Community Problem Oriented Policing (mvcpop.com) conference will host another full day of training. We will illustrate how to be proactive through city cleanups, block parties and finding and helping those in need. Many of our youth desire to help and make a difference. At this conference, many youth will also be there in attendance. The idea is to engage more of our youth to show compassion for the city and neighborhoods they live in.

Q What words of encouragement and hope do you have for citizens about the future health and safety of our community?

A Its our human history that our future will be defined by the decisions we make. Theres no more sitting back on automatic pilot. We must let go of the past. We are to make a daily conscious effort to become engaged in the present.

Mich. governor likes some of Obama’s tuition ideas 2012/02/03 at 2:12 am

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder says he liked some of President Barack Obamas ideas on college tuition restraint.

The Republican governor didnt attend the presidents Friday speech at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor about holding down college costs. Instead, Snyder was in Grand Rapids addressing the Michigan Press Associations annual meeting — a previous commitment he had made.

Snyder declined to say whether hell recommend more money for universities, saying that will be part of the budget message on Feb. 9.

He says he looks forward to good dialogue with the universities to ensure tuition stays down and more students graduate.

Funding for state universities dropped by 15 percent in this years budget. Many schools raised tuition nearly 7 percent to help make up for the lost state support.

Ideas, and corn, were popping for junior master gardeners 2012/02/02 at 8:34 am

It was a long time coming, but Junior Master Gardeners got to taste the fruits, or in this case vegetables, of their labor during a popcorn and planning meeting last week in the 4-H building at the Mower County Fairgrounds.

Youngsters in grades three and up met to plan ideas and projects and cap the meeting off with popcorn made using corn from their own garden.

The kids planted the corn last May, said Therese Manggaard, a master gardener who volunteers in the junior garden. It wasnt mature until the end of October, and needed to dry out. It takes about a month to dry so it will pop.

Once it was ready to pop, the corn got a culinary makeover, creating six different popcorn treats for kids to sample using a microwave, an air popper, or a simple pan and oil over the stove.

Groups: Ideas to use future WOW money miss the mark 2012/02/01 at 12:37 pm

Almost a dozen local nonprofits and two city departments have pitched ideas for using future hotel-motel tax revenue that Wonders of Wildlife has decided to relinquish. But two groups tasked with reviewing the proposals have said they don?t think any ideas hit the mark.

City Manager Greg Burris had asked members of the Springfield Hotel-Lodging Association and the Convention Visitors Bureau to weigh in on the proposals, solicited over the course of about a month.

Ideas for using the money ? about $330,000 is expected to be available annually for 15 years ? ranged from funding public art to paying off existing debt on Jordan Valley Park or other projects.

Based on a legal reading of the ballot language when the tax was approved in 1998, Burris had limited requests to those that involve capital expenses and will ?promote recreation, education, tourism, and the local economy.?

In a Jan. 24 letter, representatives of the hotel association and visitors bureau said they think the intent of the tax measure was even narrower, with an emphasis on projects that would draw visitors to Springfield ? thus generating more hotel-motel tax revenue.

?They feel that they were very clearly told when the tax was being considered in 1998 that the purpose was to increase travel and tourism. They want to make sure the money will be used that way when it?s reallocated,? said Tracy Kimberlin, president of the visitors bureau. ?We have an opportunity here to cause something significant to happen.?

Kimberlin said the groups discussed the idea, proposed by city Finance Director Mary Mannix-Decker, of applying the leftover tax revenue toward existing debt, allowing a portion of the tax to sunset an estimated three years early.

That idea had appeal, he said, ?but I think they all felt they would rather see it spent on something significant that would benefit their business.?

None of the current proposals fit the bill, the letter says, suggesting the city create a task force to study the issue and solicit a wider range of ideas over a longer period of time.
