POLL: Excitement builds for basketball playoffs 2011/02/25 at 7:08 am
Playoff time is upon us for the winter of 2010-11 and with it brings dreams of league, sectional and state championships for scholastic athletes across Upstate New York. The excitement also builds for the parents and communities supporting teams and individuals in their title quests.
Boys basketball drew the most support among seven sports when The Times and The Telegram informally asked their online readers Which high school winter sports postseason most interests you?
Just more than 30 percent of the 105 votes cast at www.littlefallstimes.com and www.herkimertelegram.com selected boys basketball with wrestling edging girls basketball by three votes for the second spot.
In all three cases, fans will be in the heart of competition soon. Section II seeded its basketball playoffs earlier this week with teams in Fort Plain and Canajoharie scheduled to begin play Wednesday. Section III seeds its playoffs Sunday afternoon. Ilion wrestler Jon Treen has already claimed a sectional championship and will travel to Albany to compete for a state title next weekend.
