ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The text message flashed on the cell phone of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford on the night before Christmas Eve.
Margaret Stafford had been anxiously awaiting her sons game against the San Diego Chargers and hoped to lighten the mood before a contest that could clinch the Lions first playoff berth in 12 years. When Stafford glanced down at the message, he had to be amused by his mothers sense of humor. All shed written was a single question: Do you think Santa will understand a comfortable lead with time left in the fourth quarter?
You couldnt blame Mama Stafford, either. Like every other Lions fan this season, shed watched her boy lead a team...

Paul, whose distrust of big government is the centerpiece of his presidential campaign, uses the more expensive government rate for Continental Airlines when buying his tickets. Paul chose not to buy the cheaper economy tickets at a fraction of the price because they aren’t refundable or as flexible for scheduling, his congressional staff said.
“We always get him full refundable tickets since the congressional schedule sometimes changes quickly,” said Jeff Deist, Paul’s chief of staff. Paul might have to pay out of his own pocket for canceled flights in some cases if he didn’t buy refundable tickets, Deist said.
But records show that most of the flights...
Many Wall Street analysts, travel agents and other longtime industry watchers are bracing for at least a short-term slump in bookings industrywide as questions about the safety of cruise vacations swirl. The longer-term fallout is less clear, they say. With the tragedy still fresh, it is difficult to know what the impact on future bookings may be, says UBS analyst Robin Farley. There are not many examples of incidents comparable to this. Farley on Tuesday slashed her 2012 earnings estimate for Costa Cruises parent company Carnival to $2.03 a share, about 26% below the level she was expecting before the accident. She says the new forecast takes into account the impact...
An Atmore couple is working hard this election year to ensure they have as big an impact as possible in the 2012 presidential race and their efforts to date include a trip across the country to take part in the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus.
Jeff and Jodi Peacock packed up and headed for Des Moines earlier this month, and Jeff, who serves as the chairman of the Escambia County Republican Party, said he believes the trip had an actual impact on the caucus and illustrates why, in America, every vote truly does count.
“We went up Thursday before the caucuses and we volunteered,” Peacock said. “We did a lot of phone banking and we attended some rallies. This was one of the largest...

For the second year in a row, Iowa will be without its top rusher at the Insight Bowl, a result of Tuesdays announcement that Marcus Coker has been suspended.
